I believe that the future of our citizens, their towns and cities, and indeed, the nation itself depends on a rich, vibrant and diverse arts and heritage community. The viability of cities greatly depends on their cultural opportunities. Our artists are inventive and generous. But the arts can flourish only when they have adequate, stable, sustained investment.

I ask that you support the following two requests: 1) increase the annual budget of the Canada Council for the Arts to $300 million; and 2) invest in a new market access and development fund – an investment measure aimed, in part, at replacing cut programs that supported international touring and dissemination.

The arts define us. They give depth and meaning to our lives. Their intrinsic values celebrate our humanity, broaden our horizons, demonstrate our openness.

Our children thrive on the arts. Arts and culture are central to enhancing the creative spirit in children. And, they aid in developing learning skills.

The arts are a reflection of Canada’s evolving culture and of our national identity in the international community. The arts are how we speak to each other across our vast geography. And, they are how we tell the world about our country.

Canada’s future depends on creativity and imagination which inspire innovation, affect the quality of life in our cities and communities and, in turn, our ability to generate social and economic growth.

A thriving arts and culture sector will contribute to Canada’s success as a leader in a global society. The federal government plays a key role in fostering the sector’s vitality. By publicly investing significantly in arts and culture, Canada and Canadians will benefit from the meaningful and unique ways the cultural sector contributes to the advancement of Canada’s position, both domestically and on the world stage.

Imagine if the arts could do more. Because they can.
