Together, let’s build the case for further funding in the arts!

This afternoon, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will deliver the federal budget for 200809.

Recognizing this will be the first year the additional $30 million in funding to the Canada Council for the Arts is made permanent, the Canadian Arts Coalition does not anticipate any announcements respecting additional funding to the Council. Rather, it is clear that over the next year the federal government will be looking for demonstrative evidence of the positive impact that the enhanced arts funding has had for Canadians.

Canadian artists and arts organizations are strongly encouraged to ensure that decisionmakers and influence leaders in their own community – MPs, provincial MLAs and MPPs, other candidates, business leaders and local newspapers are made aware of how important this additional funding is. Please share with them your stories about how you, or your organization are better able to provide Canadians with meaningful arts experiences, while also enhancing the prosperity and quality of life in your community. This is a very important step towards building the case for further increases: we would ask you to send us a copy of any such document you may produce so that we can build a portfolio of evidence for further use.

The Canadian Arts Coalition will continue to monitor and engage with, as appropriate, federal initiatives respecting additional funding to the arts through the Canada Council.

The Canadian Arts Coalition is the largest group of artists, arts executives and business leaders ever assembled from across the country. We are united in the view that greater public investment in the arts through the Canada Council for the Arts is essential to Canada’s future.
